A Broad Hint
Duke Jing loved to catch and keep birds. One day his housekeeper Zhuzou was careless and a bird escaped. Duke Jing was incensed and ordered Zhuzou's death.
Yanzi, a court official told the duke:" Zhuzou is guilty ; but let me enumerate his crimes before you execute him."
The duke consented.
Zhuzou was brought before the duke and Yanzi pronounced the three charges:
"You are in charge of the lord's birds,but you let one of them escape. This is your first offence."
"You caused the lord to put to death a man for the sake of a bird. This is your second offence."
"When the princes of the other states hear about this, they will think our lord values birds more than men. This is your third offence."
Yanzi then turned to the duke and said,"Lord, let the offender be put to death!"
The duke blushed and said, " Let his life be spared!"

MORAL: Know what to say, and how to say it.
